A Tribal repository
March 11, 2008 at 9:24 am | In books, conversation, culture, film, music | 5 CommentsExpanding on the idea of the “book group”, the aim of the Tribal Repository is to generate shared culture “offline”, that is, not face to face nor in shared time. It takes the pressure off meeting but affords us opportunities to share ideas – books, music and films that are important to us as individuals. Discussion around these things is optional.
Participants contribute a book, a musical item, and a film item, per month. As I see it the main commodity and concern in this is time, so I’d give a time value to each type of artefact. I suggest 10 hours per book (dependant on length), 3 hours per CD (3 listens minimum), 2 hours for lecture/sermon/audiobook, and 2 hours for film. I’d then allot 15 hours per month – 1 book, 1 CD and 1 movie, for example – for consumption.
So if you are in you need to find about 15 hours per month. At the start of the month, when all are meeting “online” – face to face in shared time, all items are brought and exchanged, then returned 4 weeks later. We can blog the monthly repository and then review in comments.

It would be good to all be on the “same page at the same time” WOuld it not be better to select a one book , one DVD, one CD per month and all read the same and then slice and dice on-line.

i love this idea of a tribal repository – no i luuurv it.
maybe it would be useful to give people 3 media options – eg a book, a dvd & a cd – per month and build the repository via blogging etc. if someone’s having a busy month, they might prefer listening to the cd rather than read the book, for example.
if it’s too set, it could turn into a sepository

so it Andy and Tim in the simple, expensive corner and RuZl and I in the complex, cheap one.
That means I have the originator of the tribal sepository on MY side.

I think this is a brilliant idea, but how do we get it functional?
Are you suggesting blogging around each ‘media’ as comments or conversations? Also, on any given site it is often the post at the top of the pile that gets the attention. Maybe we should have some kind of ’streaming’, perhaps even wiki-fying?

I think the primary thing is to get the concrete community sharing ideas. How this is done is secondary, although as I see, not that straightforward. Wiki is a very good idea. But I will leave the how out for now, let’s get a list of 1 book, 1 music/audio, 1 movie each then decide on how.
So I propose
Book: Care of the Soul (Thomas Moore)
Music: Mezzanine (Massive Attack)
Film: One Giant Leap (1 Giant Leap)
